History of the Koi FishKoi are often associated with strength of character, perseverance, accomplishment and courage. The fish also symbolizes good fortune, success, prosperity and ambition. Their long history and hardy nature has also led to koi being associated with longevity. The Koi Waterfall LegendAn ancient tale tells of a huge school of golden koi swimming upstream the Yellow River in China. Gaining strength by fighting against the current, the school glimmered as they swam together through the river. When they reached a waterfall at the end of the river, many of the koi turned back, letting the flow of the river carry them away.The remaining koi refused to give up. Leaping from the depths of the river, they attempted to reach the top of the waterfall to no avail. Their efforts caught the attention of local demons, who mocked their efforts and heightened the waterfall out of malice. After a hundred years of jumping, one koi finally reached the top of the waterfall. Walters, Robyn Alece Gibson, and Patricia Encarnación, three emerging women of color. The show examines the nature of identity in relation to the environment by highlighting the work of creators who engage with either natural or corporeal elements. Walters’ investigates these themes through self-portraiture, many of which are set against rock outcroppings and bodies of water. Gibson explores this through figurative drawings that depict intertwined bodies set against blocks of text. And Encarnacion contemplates these ideas using photographs of bodies ensconced by foliage. Though each artist uniquely depicts how humans engage with one another or the places they inhabit, all three artists pose varying questions about how our surroundings define us and the gaze of others. The subject of work is a woman sitting in a chair holding a pair of scissors. She faces away from a large combination of old suitcases that are bound together by rope and tied to her through her long hair that flows behind her. The hair functions a symbol of strength and beauty.
